Journal: Ying Yong Sheng Tai Xue Bao Citation: V : 19 P : 2056-66 Year: 2008 Type: In-Process
Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub19102324 Accession (PMID): 19102324
Abstract: The correlations between the situation indicators ( peak time of ingoing , last length of peak period , and moth quantity in peak period ) of rice leaf roller in Yixing , Yandu and Jingjiang of Jiangsu Province and the grid monthly sea surface temperature ( SST ) of west Pacific were analyzed by statistical method , and the correlation maps were produced by using GRADS software . The regions in which the SST was significantly correlated with the situation indicators were identified , and the SST at these regions , which was processed by optimization correlation technique , was used as the predictor to set up the long-term models for predicting the situation indicators of rice leaf roller during its immigration period in the three regions . The results showed that the immigration time of rice leaf roller in each of the regions was highly correlated with the SST in that region , and the duration of immigration peak was well correlated with the SST of west Pacific . The correlations between moth amount and SST were significant and stable , and showed some seasonality . Model calibrations indicated that the agreements between outputs from all models and observations were statistically significant ( alpha = 0 . 01 ) , and model validations demonstrated the applicability of the models developed in this study in predicting the situation indicators of rice leaf roller . These models were capable of predicting the possible occurrence situation of rice leaf roller one to two months in advance , being of significance in the prevention and control of rice leaf roller , suitable management of rice production , reduction of pesticide pollution , and protection of environment .

Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub20387435 Accession (PMID): 20387435
Abstract: Based on the measurements of rice growth and the ordinary meteorological observations from eight main agro-meteorological stations in Jiangsu Province in 1986-2007 , this paper analyzed the characteristics of generation circulation corresponding to the abnormal strong and southern subtropical high pressure in 2003 ( the year with a typically high temperature ) , the relationships between the abnormalities of subtropical high pressure and previous sea surface temperature , and the physiological responses of rice to the abnormal high temperature during its crucial development stages . In the meantime , a field correlation analysis was made on the relationships between the harm index of high temperature in the northern ( Huaibei ) , middle ( Jianghuai ) , and southern ( Sunan ) areas of Jiangsu and the sea surface temperature ( SST ) of Western Pacific . The results showed that the harm index of high temperature in the three areas was highly correlated with the SST of Nino area , northern area , and warm pool area of Western Pacific , respectively , but the significance and temporal evolution of the correlations varied among the areas . The transformation of SST was conducted to optimize its correlation with the harm index of high temperature , and an increased reliability of SST acting as a predictor of high temperature harm was obtained . The simulation results of the established models in predicting high temperature harm to rice in Huaibei , Jianghuai and Sunan areas of Jiangsu Province were significant at 0 . 01 level .

Title: Effect of ENSO-driven precipitation on population irruptions of the Yangtze vole Microtus fortis calamorum in the Dongting Lake region of China .
Author: Zhang Z Xu L Guo C Wang Y Guo Y
Journal: Integr Zool Citation: V : 5 P : 176-84 Year: 2010 Type: In-Process
Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub21392335 Accession (PMID): 21392335
Abstract: The Yangtze vole ( Microtus fortis Buechner , 1889 ) is a small herbivore species that inhabits lake beaches in the Dongting Lake region along the Yangtze River in Southern China . Its population shows strong oscillations during the wet season due to summer precipitation-induced immigration away from the lake into adjacent rice fields . The effect of El Nino-Southern Oscillation-driven precipitation on population abundance and growth of the vole species is not fully understood . We undertook an analysis of the combined data of 4 time series covering 1981-2006 from 4 different sites and a separate analysis on a single time series ( 1981-2006 ) from one site . Our results demonstrate that a dual effect of El Nino-Southern Oscillation-driven precipitation on the population abundance of voles is time-dependent : precipitation in the current year has a positive effect , whereas precipitation in the previous year has a negative effect . The dual effect of precipitation on vole population is well explained by the unique interactions among vole population , precipitation water level and the lake beach habitat around Dongting Lake . We found that drier than average weather of the previous year benefited voles because their breeding habitats , lake beaches , were exposed for long stretches of time . Wet weather was found to increase the number of voles inhabiting rice fields because as the water level of the lake rose they were forced from beaches into surrounding rice fields . Summer precipitation in the Dongting Lake region was found to be positively associated with the sea surface temperature ( SST ) of the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean of the previous year and winter SST and spring SST of the current year . Annual rates of increase in the vole population of the reconstructed time series are negatively associated with the vole abundance and autumn precipitation of the previous year and winter precipitation of the current years . These results suggest that both extrinsic and density-dependent intrinsic factors may affect population dynamics of the Yangtze voles .

Title: [ Effect of cooking on protein digestibility of sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor ( L ) Moench ) ]
Author: Agudelo RA Alarcn OM Fliedel G
Journal: Citation: V : 48 ( 1 ) P : 47-51 Year: 1998 Type: ARTICLE
Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub9754405 Accession (PMID): 9754405
Abstract: The changes in protein digestibility that occur during cooking have interested many scientists . In this study the effect of cooking sorghum in water on the in vitro protein digestibility ( IVPD ) was evaluated using sorghum grains not containing tannin ( SST ) , and grains containing detoxified tannin ( SPD ) . The results were compared with rice and maize . The effect of sulfites present in the water used for cooking was also determined . The IVPD of sorghum excent of tannins before cooking was 71 . 1% smaller ( p < 0 . 05 ) than that obtained for com ( 80 . 8% ) , polished rice ( 90 . 6% ) or sorgum with detoxified tannins ( 80 . 4% ) . After cooking in water the IVPD decreased to 23 . 1% , 66 . 3% , 3 . 1% and 3 . 2% for SST , SPD , polished rice and corn endosperms , respectively . The IVPD of SST and SPD treated with 0 . 1M sodium bisulfite was 65 . 2 and 50 . 1% , which corresponds to a decrease in IVPD of 8 . 0 and 37 . 7% , respectively . Similar results were obtained when 0 . 1M sodium metabisulfite is added to the cooking media . These findings demonstrate that sulfites inhibit the sudden decrease of the IVPD of cooked sorghum grains , and suggest that these compounds may block the formation of disulfide bridges ( -S-S- ) among the gamma-kafirins molecules located on the surface of the sorghum protein bodies or possibly other factors involved which will be later studied .

Title: Quantitative trait loci mapping of resistance to Laodelphax striatellus ( Homoptera : Delphacidae ) in rice using recombinant inbred lines .
Author: Duan CX Wan JM Zhai HQ Chen Q Wang JK Su N Lei CL

Abstract: Laodelphax striatellus Fallen ( Homoptera : Delphacidae ) , is a serious pest in rice , Oryza sativa L , production . A mapping population consisting of 81 recombinant inbred lines ( RILs ) , derived from a cross between japonica Kinmaze and indica DV85 rice , was used to detect quantitative trait loci ( QTLs ) for the resistance to L striatellus . Seedbox screening test ( SST ) , antixenosis test , and antibiosis test were used to evaluate the resistance response of the two parents and 81 RILs to L striatellus at the seedling stage , and composite interval mapping was used for QTL analysis . When the resistance was measured by SST method , two QTLs conferring resistance to L striatellus were mapped on chromosome 11 , namely , Qsbph11a and Qsbph11b , with log of odds scores 2 . 51 and 4 . 38 , respectively . The two QTLs explained 16 . 62 and 27 . 78% of the phenotypic variance in this population , respectively . In total , three QTLs controlling antixenosis against L striatellus were detected on chromosomes 3 , 4 , and 11 , respectively , accounting for 37 . 5% of the total phenotypic variance . Two QTLs expressing antibiosis to L striatellus were mapped on chromosomes 3 and 11 , respectively , explaining 25 . 9% of the total phenotypic variance . The identified QTL located between markers XNpb202 and C1172 on chromosome 11 was detected repeatedly by three different screening methods ; therefore , it may be important to confer the resistance to L striatellus . Once confirmed in other mapping populations , these QTLs should be useful in breeding for resistance to L striatellus by marker-assisted selection of different resistance genes in rice varieties .

Title: Identification of salt-tolerant QTLs with strong genetic background effect using two sets of reciprocal introgression lines in rice .
Author: Cheng L Wang Y Meng L Hu X Cui Y Sun Y Zhu L Ali J Xu J Li Z
Journal: Genome Citation: V : 55 P : 45-55 Year: 2012 Type: In-Data-Review
Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub22181322 Accession (PMID): 22181322
Abstract: Effect of genetic background on detection of quantitative trait locus ( QTL ) governing salinity tolerance ( ST ) was studied using two sets of reciprocal introgression lines ( ILs ) derived from a cross between a moderately salinity tolerant japonica variety , Xiushui09 from China , and a drought tolerant but salinity susceptible indica breeding line , IR2061-520-6-9 from the Philippines . Salt toxicity symptoms ( SST ) on leaves , days to seedling survival ( DSS ) , and sodium and potassium uptake by shoots were measured under salinity stress of 140 mmol/L of NaCl . A total of 47 QTLs , including 26 main-effect QTLs ( M-QTLs ) and 21 epistatic QTLs ( E-QTLs ) , were identified from the two sets of reciprocal ILs . Among the 26 M-QTLs , only four ( 15 . 4% ) were shared in the reciprocal backgrounds while no shared E-QTLs were detected , indicating that ST QTLs , especially E-QTLs , were very specific to the genetic background . Further , 78 . 6% of the M-QTLs for SST and DSS identified in the reciprocal ILs were also detected in the recombinant inbred lines ( RILs ) from the same cross , which clearly brings out the background effect on ST QTL detection and its utilization in ST breeding . The detection of ILs with various levels of pyramiding of nonallelic M-QTL alleles for ST from Xiushui09 into IR2061-520-6-9 allowed us to further improve the ST in rice .

Title: Dissection of genetic overlap of salt tolerance QTLs at the seedling and tillering stages using backcross introgression lines in rice .

Abstract: QTLs for salt-tolerance ( ST ) related traits at the seedling and tillering stages were identified using 99 BC ( 2 ) F ( 8 ) introgression lines ( IL ) derived from a cross between IR64 ( indica ) as a recurrent parent and Binam ( japonica ) from Iran as the donor parent . Thirteen QTLs affecting survival days of seedlings ( SDS ) , score of salt toxicity of leaves ( SST ) , shoot K ( + ) concentration ( SKC ) and shoot Na ( + ) concentration ( SNC ) at the seedling stage and 22 QTLs underlying fresh weight of shoots ( FW ) , tiller number per plant ( TN ) and plant height ( PH ) at the tillering stage were identified . Most QTLs detected at the tillering stage showed obvious differential expression to salt stress and were classified into three types based on their differential behaviors . Type I included 11 QTLs which were expressed only under the non-stress condition . Type II included five QTLs expressed in the control and the salt stress conditions , and three of them ( QPh5 , QPh8 and QTn9 ) had similar quantity and the same direction of gene effect , suggesting their expression was less influenced by salt stress . Type III included six QTLs which were detectable only under salt stress , suggesting that these QTLs were apparently induced by the stress . Thirteen QTLs affecting trait difference or trait stability of ILs between the stress and non-stress conditions were identified and the Binam alleles at all loci except QPh4 , QTn2 and QFw2a decreased trait difference . The three QTLs less influenced by the stress and 13 QTLs affecting trait stability were considered as ST QTLs which contributed to ST . Comparing the distribution of QTLs detected at the seedling and tillering stages , most ( 69% ) of them were genetically independent . Only four were the same or adjacent regions on chromosomes 1 , 2 , 8 and 11 harboring ST QTLs detected at the two stages , suggesting that partial genetic overlap of ST across the two stages occurs . It is likely , therefore , to develop ST rice variety for both stages by pyramiding of ST QTLs of different stages or selection against the overlapping QTLs between the two stages via marker-assisted selection ( MAS ) .
