Score: 7.00 | Title: Identification of heading date quantitative trait locus Hd6 and characterization of its epistatic interactions with Hd2 in rice using advanced backcross progeny .
| Author: Yamamoto T Lin H Sasaki T Yano M | Journal: Genetics Citation: V : 154 ( 2 ) P : 885-91 Year: 2000 Type: ARTICLE | Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub10655238 Accession (PMID): 10655238 | Abstract: A backcrossed population ( BC ( 4 ) F ( 2 ) ) derived from a cross between a japonica rice variety , Nipponbare , as the recurrent parent and an indica rice variety , Kasalath , as the donor parent showed a long-range variation in days to heading .
Quantitative trait loci ( QTL ) analysis revealed that two QTL , one on chromosome 3 , designated Hd6 , and another on chromosome 2 , designated Hd7 , were involved in this variation ; and Hd6 was precisely mapped as a single Mendelian factor by using progeny testing ( BC ( 4 ) F ( 3 ) ) .
The nearly isogenic line with QTL ( QTL-NIL ) that carries the chromosomal segment from Kasalath for the Hd6 region in Nipponbares genetic background was developed by marker-assisted selection .
In a day-length treatment test , the QTL-NIL for Hd6 prominently increased days to heading under a 13 . 5-hr day length compared with the recurrent parent , Nipponbare , suggesting that Hd6 controls photoperiod sensitivity .
QTL analysis of the F ( 2 ) population derived from a cross between the QTL-NILs revealed existence of an epistatic interaction between Hd2 , which is one of the photoperiod sensitivity genes detected in a previous analysis , and Hd6 .
The day-length treatment tests of these QTL-NILs , including the line introgressing both Hd2 and Hd6 , also indicated an epistatic interaction for photoperiod sensitivity between them .

| Author: Takahashi Y Shomura A Sasaki T Yano M | Journal: Proc . Natl . Acad . Sci . USA Citation: V : 98 ( 14 ) P : 7922-7 Year: 2001 Type: ARTICLE | Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub11416158 Accession (PMID): 11416158 | Abstract: Hd6 is a quantitative trait locus involved in rice photoperiod sensitivity .
It was detected in backcross progeny derived from a cross between the japonica variety Nipponbare and the indica variety Kasalath .
To isolate a gene at Hd6 , we used a large segregating population for the high-resolution and fine-scale mapping of Hd6 and constructed genomic clone contigs around the Hd6 region .
Linkage analysis with P1-derived artificial chromosome clone-derived DNA markers delimited Hd6 to a 26 . 4-kb genomic region .
We identified a gene encoding the alpha subunit of protein kinase CK2 ( CK2 alpha ) in this region .
The Nipponbare allele of CK2 alpha contains a premature stop codon , and the resulting truncated product is undoubtedly nonfunctional Genetic complementation analysis revealed that the Kasalath allele of CK2 alpha increases days-to-heading .
Map-based cloning with advanced backcross progeny enabled us to identify a gene underlying a quantitative trait locus even though it exhibited a relatively small effect on the phenotype . | Matching Sentences: [ Sen. 3, subscore: 3.00 ]: To isolate a gene at Hd6 , we used a large segregating population for the high-resolution and fine-scale mapping of Hd6 and constructed genomic clone contigs around the Hd6 region . Score: 4.00 | Title: [ Analysis of heading time genotype for a rice photoperiod and thermo--sensitive male sterile line PeiAi64S ] | Author: Xu JF Jiang L Wang GG Liu SJ Chen LM Wang CM Luo LG Wan JM .
| Journal: Yi Chuan Xue Bao Citation: V : 32 ( 1 ) P : 57-65 Year: 2005 Type: ARTICLE | Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub15715439 Accession (PMID): 15715439 | Abstract: PeiAi64S , a photoperiod and thermo-sensitive genic male sterile , has been wildly applied to hybrid rice seed production in China , but its photoperiod-sensitivity gene for heading date in this sterile line was still unknown .
This definitely limited the further use of this sterile line in breeding practice and re-production of hybrid seeds .
To solve this problem , using heading time nearly isogenic lines EGO - EG7 , ER - LR , T65 - T65m and six heading date QTL-isogenic lines , NIL ( Hd1 ) - NIL ( Hd6 ) with the genes of Nipponbare but Hd1 - Hd6 genes from Kasalath respectively , we performed a genetic analysis of PeiAi64S with special reference to photoperiod-sensitivity loci , in natural long days at Nanjing ( 32 degrees N ) where the average day-length is about 14 h and in natural short days at Linshui county , Hainan province ( 18 degrees 29N ) , where the average day-length is about 11 . 6 h during the course of rice growing respectively .
The F1 and F2 generations from the crosses PeiAi64S x heading time nearly isogenic lines were subjected to genetic analyses .
Experimental results showed that PeiAi64S carries photoperiod-sensitivity allele gene E1 and E3 and dominant earliness gene Ef-1 in E1 and E3 and Ef-1 loci , respectively , and a photoperiod insensitivity allele Se-1 degrees in Se-1 locus .
Meanwhile , the photoperiod-sensitivity gene E1 and photoperiod-insensitivity gene Se-1e in PeiAi64S were also identified by crossing with the NIL ( Hd1 ) and NIL ( Hd4 ) .
In addition , a recessive inhibitor for photoperiod-sensitive gene E1 or Se-1 ( n ) and other modified photoperiod-sensitive genes : i-Se-1 , E3 , Hd3 ( En-Se-1 ) , Hd5 and Hd6 , were identified in PeiAi64S by crossing with QTL nearly isogenic lines : NIL ( Hd2 ) , NIL ( Hd3 ) , NIL ( Hd5 ) and NIL ( Hd6 ) , The results indicated that the genotype of PeiAi64Ss heading date was : E1E1e2e2E3E3Se-1 ( e ) Se-1 ( e ) Ef-1 Ef-1 i-Se-1 i-Se-1 .

Score: 3.00 | Title: Flowering response of rice to photoperiod and temperature : a QTL analysis using a phenological model .
| Author: Nakagawa H Yamagishi J Miyamoto N Motoyama M Yano M Nemoto K | Journal: Theor . Appl . Genet . Citation: V : 110 ( 4 ) P : 778-86 Year: 2005 Type: ARTICLE | Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub15723276 Accession (PMID): 15723276 | Abstract: In this study we have attempted to quantify the thermal and photoperiodical responses of rice ( Oryza sativa L ) flowering time QTLs jointly by a date-of-planting field experiment of a mapping population , and a phenological model analysis that separately parameterizes the two responses , based on daily temperature , daily photoperiod and flowering date .
For this purpose , the three-stage Beta model , which parameterizes the sensitivity to temperature ( parameter alpha ) , the sensitivity to photoperiod ( parameter beta ) , and earliness under optimal conditions ( 10 h photoperiod at 30 degrees C ) ( parameter G ) , was applied to Nipponbare x Kasalath backcross inbred lines that were transplanted on five dates .
QTLs for the beta value were detected in the four known flowering time QTL ( Hd1 , Hd2 , Hd6 and Hd8 ) regions , while QTLs for the G value were detected only in the Hd1 and Hd2 regions .
This result was consistent with previous reports on near-isogenic lines ( NILs ) of Hd1 , Hd2 and Hd6 , where these loci were involved in photoperiod sensitivity , and where Hd1 and Hd2 conferred altered flowering under both 10 and 14 h photoperiods , while Hd6 action was only affected by the 14 h photoperiod .
Hd8 was shown to control photoperiod sensitivity for the first time .
Interestingly , Hd1 and Hd2 were associated with a QTL for the alpha value , which might support the previous hypothesis that the process of photoinduction depends on temperature .
These results demonstrate that our approach can effectively quantify environmental responses of flowering time QTLs without controlled environments or NILs . | Matching Sentences: [ Sen. 4, subscore: 2.00 ]: This result was consistent with previous reports on near-isogenic lines ( NILs ) of Hd1 , Hd2 and Hd6 , where these loci were involved in photoperiod sensitivity , and where Hd1 and Hd2 conferred altered flowering under both 10 and 14 h photoperiods , while Hd6 action was only affected by the 14 h photoperiod . Score: 3.00 | Title: The role of casein kinase II in flowering time regulation has diversified during evolution .
| Author: Ogiso E Takahashi Y Sasaki T Yano M Izawa T | Journal: Plant Physiol Citation: V : 152 P : 808-20 Year: 2010 Type: MEDLINE | Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub20007447 Accession (PMID): 20007447 | Abstract: Casein kinase II ( CK2 ) is a protein kinase with an evolutionarily conserved function as a circadian clock component in several organisms , including the long-day plant Arabidopsis ( Arabidopsis thaliana ) .
The circadian clock component CIRCADIAN CLOCK ASSOCIATED1 ( CCA1 ) is a CK2 target in Arabidopsis , where it influences photoperiodic flowering .
In rice ( Oryza sativa ) , a short-day plant , Heading date6 ( Hd6 ) encodes a CK2alpha subunit that delays flowering time under long-day conditions .
Here , we demonstrate that control of flowering time in rice by the Hd6 CK2alpha subunit requires a functional Hd1 gene ( an Arabidopsis CONSTANS ortholog ) and is independent of the circadian clock mechanism .
Our findings from overexpressing the dominant-negative CK2 allele in rice support the independence of CK2 function from the circadian clock .
This lack of control of the circadian clock by Hd6 CK2alpha might be due to the presence of glutamate in OsLHY ( a CCA1 ortholog in rice ) instead of the serine at the corresponding CK2 target site in CCA1 .
However , this glutamate is critical for the control of the OsPRR1 gene ( a rice ortholog of the Arabidopsis TOC1/PRR1 gene ) by OsLHY for regulation of the circadian clock .
We also demonstrated that the other conserved CK2 target sites in OsLHY conferred robust rhythmic expression of OsLHY-LUC under diurnal conditions .
These findings imply that the role of CK2 in flowering-time regulation in higher plants has diversified during evolution .
