Citation: V : 279 ( 2 ) P : 193-7 Year: 1991 Type: ARTICLE | Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub1840527 Accession (PMID): 1840527 | Abstract: The rpl33-rps18 gene cluster of the maize chloroplast genome has been mapped and sequenced .
The derived amino acid sequence of the S18 protein shows a 7-fold repeat of a hydrophilic heptapeptide domain , S K Q P F R K , in the N-terminal region .
Such a sequence is absent in the E coli S18 and in the chloroplast S18 of the lower plant liverwort .
In tobacco and rice chloroplast S18 it is present 2 and 6 times , respectively .
Thus a long N-terminal repeat ( resembling in composition the large C-terminal heptapeptide repeat in the eukaryotic pol II ) appears to be characteristic of monocot cereal S18 .

Score: 1.00 | Title: Comparison of gene order of GIGANTEA loci in yellow-poplar , monocots , and eudicots .
| Author: Liang H Barakat A Schlarbaum SE Mandoli DF Carlson JE | Journal: Genome Citation: V : 53 P : 533-44 Year: 2010 Type: MEDLINE | Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub20616875 Accession (PMID): 20616875 | Abstract: GIGANTEA plays an important role in the control of circadian rhythms and photoperiodic flowering .
The GIGANTEA gene has been studied in various species , but not in basal angiosperms .
Moreover , to the best of our knowledge , no study of the genome organization of a basal angiosperm has yet been published .
In this study , we sequenced a bacterial artificial chromosome ( BAC ) harboring GIGANTEA from yellow-poplar ( Liriodendron tulipifera L ) and compared the genomic organization of this gene in yellow-poplar with that in other species from various angiosperm clades .
This is the first report on the gene structure and organization of a large contig in any basal angiosperm species .
The BAC clone , covering a region of approximately 122 kb from the yellow-poplar genome , was sequenced and assembled by coupling the 454 pyrosequencing technology with ABI capillary sequencing .
In addition to GIGANTEA , the gene RPS18 . A ( encoding ribosomal protein S18 . A ) was found in this segment of the genome .
We found that gene content and order in this region of the yellow-poplar genome were similar to those in the corresponding region in eudicots but not in Oryza sativa and Sorghum bicolor , implying that clustering of the GIGANTEA and RPS18 . A genes is ancestral and separation of the genes occurred after the phylogenetic split of monocots from dicots .
Phylogenetic analysis of GIGANTEA amino acid sequences placed yellow-poplar closer to eudicots than to monocots .
In addition , evidence for transposition and large insertions and duplications was found , suggesting multiple and complex mechanisms of basal angiosperm genome evolution .

Score: 1.00 | Title: Glycosylation regulates specific induction of rice immune responses by Acidovorax avenae flagellin .
| Author: Hirai H Takai R Iwano M Nakai M Kondo M Takayama S Isogai A Che FS | Journal: J Biol Chem Citation: V : 286 P : 25519-30 Year: 2011 Type: MEDLINE | Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub21628471 Accession (PMID): 21628471 | Abstract: Plants have a sensitive system that detects various pathogen-derived molecules to protect against infection .
Flagellin , a main component of the bacterial flagellum , from the rice avirulent N1141 strain of the Gram-negative phytopathogenic bacterium Acidovorax avenae induces plant immune responses including HO generation , whereas flagellin from the rice virulent K1 strain of A avenae does not induce these immune responses .
To clarify the molecular mechanism that leads to these differing responses between the K1 and N1141 flagellins , recombinant K1 and N1141 flagellins were generated using an Escherichia coli expression system .
When cultured rice cells were treated with recombinant K1 or N1141 flagellin , both flagellins equally induced HO generation , suggesting that post-translational modifications of the flagellins are involved in the specific induction of immune responses .
Mass spectrometry analyses using glycosyltransferase-deficient mutants showed that 1 , 600 and 2 , 150-Da glycans were present on the flagellins from N1141 and K1 , respectively .
A deglycosylated K1 flagellin induced immune responses in the same manner as N1141 flagellin .
Site-directed mutagenesis revealed that glycans were attached to four amino acid residues ( Ser ( 1 ) , Ser ( 1 ) ( 3 ) , Ser ( 2 ) ( 1 ) ( 2 ) , and Thr ( 3 ) ( 1 ) ) in K1 flagellin .
Among mutant K1 flagellins in which each glycan-attached amino acid residue was changed to alanine , S178A and S183A , K1 flagellin induced a strong immune response in cultured rice cells , indicating that the glycans at Ser ( 1 ) and Ser ( 1 ) ( 3 ) in K1 flagellin prevent epitope recognition in rice .
