Enter keyword(s) and/or category/ies. Selecting categories for a query makes a search more specific. For example, you can retrieve sentences that contain the word HSN and a Oryza sativa gene name by typing the keyword 'SPW1' and choosing the category 'gene (Oryza sativa)'. A category hit occurs when a particular word or phrase in the sentence is defined as a member of a particular category. Categories will be concatenated by a Boolean 'and' operation to other categories and keyword(s) if present. To search for terms in categories, click on the Categories/Ontology link above.

Title: Speech planning during multiple-object naming : effects of ageing .
Author: Mortensen L Meyer AS Humphreys GW
Journal: Q J Exp Psychol ( Colchester ) Citation: V : 61 P : 1217-38 Year: 2008 Type: MEDLINE
Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub18938763 Accession (PMID): 18938763
Abstract: Two experiments were conducted with younger and older speakers . In Experiment 1 , participants named single objects that were intact or visually degraded , while hearing distractor words that were phonologically related or unrelated to the object name . In both younger and older participants naming latencies were shorter for intact than for degraded objects and shorter when related than when unrelated distractors were presented . In Experiment 2 , the single objects were replaced by object triplets , with the distractors being phonologically related to the first objects name . Naming latencies and gaze durations for the first object showed degradation and relatedness effects that were similar to those in single-object naming . Older participants were slower than younger participants when naming single objects and slower and less fluent on the second but not the first object when naming object triplets . The results of these experiments indicate that both younger and older speakers plan object names sequentially , but that older speakers use this planning strategy less efficiently .

Abstract: In order to understand how the morphology of plant species has diversified over time , it is necessary to decipher how the underlying developmental programs have evolved . The regulatory network controlling shoot meristem activity is likely to have played an important role in morphological diversification and useful insights can be gained by comparing monocots and eudicots . These two distinct monophyletic groups of angiosperms diverged 130 Ma and are characterized by important differences in their morphology . Several studies of eudicot species have revealed a conserved role for NAM and CUC3 genes in meristem functioning and pattern formation through the definition of morphogenetic boundaries during development . In this study , we show that NAM and CUC3-related genes are conserved in palms and grasses , their diversification having predated the radiation of monocots and eudicots . Moreover , the NAM-miR164 posttranscriptional regulatory module is also conserved in palm species . However , in contrast to the CUC3-related genes , which share a similar expression pattern between the two angiosperm groups , the expression domain of the NAM-miR164 module differs between monocot and eudicot species . In our studies of spatial expression patterns , we compared existing eudicot data with novel results from our work using two palm species ( date palm and oil palm ) and two members of the Poaceae ( rice and millet ) . In addition to contrasting results obtained at the gene expression level , major differences were also observed between eudicot and monocot NAM-related genes in the occurrence of putative cis-regulatory elements in their promoter sequences . Overall , our results suggest that although NAM and CUC3-related proteins are functionally equivalent between monocots and eudicots , evolutionary radiation has resulted in heterotopy through alterations in the expression domain of the NAM-miR164 regulatory module .

Title: Molecular analysis of the NAC gene family in rice .

Abstract: Genes that encode products containing a NAC domain , such as NO APICAL MERISTEM ( NAM ) in petunia , CUP-SHAPED COTYLEDON2 ( CUC2 ) and NAP in Arabidopsis thaliana , have crucial functions in plant development . We describe here molecular aspects of the OsNAC genes that encode proteins with NAC domains in rice ( Oryza sativa L ) . Sequence analysis revealed that the NAC genes in plants can be divided into several subfamilies , such as the NAM , ATAF , and OsNAC3 subfamilies . In rice , OsNAC1 and OsNAC2 are classified in the NAM subfamily , which includes NAM and CUC2 , while OsNAC5 and OsNAC6 fall into the ATAF subfamily . In addition to the members of these subfamilies , the rice genome contains the NAC genes OsNAC3 , OsNAC4 ( both in the OsNAC3 subfamily ) , OsNAC7 , and OsNAC8 . These results and Southern analysis indicate that the OsNAC genes constitute a large gene family in the rice genome . Each OsNAC gene is expressed in a specific pattern in different organs , suggesting that this family has diverse and important roles in rice development .

Title: Vitamine--vitamin . The early years of discovery .

Abstract: In 1905 , Cornelius Adrianus Pekelharing found that animals fed purified proteins , carbohydrates , fats , inorganic salts , and water would thrive only if small amounts of milk were added to the diet . He concluded that the milk contained some unrecognized substance that in very small quantities was necessary for normal growth and maintenance . In 1911 , Casimir Funk isolated a concentrate from rice polishings that cured polyneuritis in pigeons . He named the concentrate "vitamine" because it appeared to be vital to life and because it was probably an amine . Although the concentrate and other "accessory food substances" were not amines , the name stuck , but the final "e" was dropped . In 1913 two groups discovered a "fat-soluble" accessory food substance . Initially believed to be a single vitamin , two separate factors were involved . One , effective against xerophthalmia , was named vitamin A ; the other , effective against rickets , was named vitamin D The factor that prevented scurvy was isolated in 1928 . Known as "water-soluble C , " it was renamed ascorbic acid .

Abstract: Mating experiments between Magnaporthe grisea Japanese rice pathogens and Guy11 , a hermaphroditic fertile rice pathogen , were done aimed at identification of avirulence genes . A cross named cross 2107 with thirty-six random progenies was obtained . Segregation analyses of genetic markers found that the cross was less suitable for genetic analysis . Backcrosses with cross 2107 progenies and Guy11 were done and another cross named cross 5307 with sixty-five progenies was obtained . A locus controlling kasugamycin resistance named Ksg1R was identified and used for a model case of genetic mapping . Bulked segregant analysis was done to find adjacent RAPD markers for mapping of the gene . Three adjacent markers to Ksg1R were obtained and a genetic map around the Ksg1R was made , but these markers were not located on a single chromosome . These results suggest that genetic analysis to identify a gene locus is available in cross 5307 . Infection assay of parental strains of cross 5307 to Japanese differential rice cultivars suggested the possibility of genetic analysis of cultivar specificity toward four rice cultivars : Aichi-asahi , Kusabue , Tsuyuake , and K59 .
