Title: Discrepancy between satisfaction with mastication , food acceptability , and masticatory performance in older adults .
Author: Ikebe K Morii K Matsuda K Nokubi T
Journal: Int J Prosthodont Citation: V : 20 P : 161-7 Year: 2007 Type: MEDLINE
Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub17455437 Accession (PMID): 17455437
Abstract: PURPOSE : The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between self-assessed satisfaction with mastication and food acceptability and masticatory performance in a large sample of older adults with various occlusal statuses . MATERIALS AND METHODS : The subjects were 708 community-dwelling , independently living elderly persons ( 351 men and 357 women ) with a mean age of 66 . 0 ( SD : 4 . 2 ) years . Satisfaction with masticatory function and food acceptability ( apples , grilled beef , and hard rice crackers ) were evaluated using questionnaires . Masticatory performance was determined using test gummy jellies developed for measuring masticatory performance . Subjects were grouped into 3 categories by posterior occlusal contacts according to the Eichner Index The Kruskal-Wallis test and a multiple logistic regression analysis for dissatisfaction with masticatory function were conducted . RESULTS : Overall , posterior occlusal contacts , food acceptability , and masticatory performance were associated with satisfaction with masticatory function when evaluated with bivariate analysis . Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the number of foods that could be eaten without difficulty was the most important explanatory variable for dissatisfaction with masticatory function ( P < . 01 ) . In contrast , objective masticatory performance was not significantly associated with dissatisfaction with masticatory function ( P = . 057 ) after controlling for posterior occlusal contacts and food acceptance . CONCLUSIONS : The subjective masticatory function was associated not only with objective masticatory performance , but also with an individuals posterior occlusal contacts .

Title: Mast cell burden and reticulin fibrosis in the myeloproliferative neoplasms : A computer-assisted image analysis study .
Author: Ahmed A Powers MP Youker KA Rice L Ewton A Dunphy CH Chang CC
Journal: Pathol Res Pract Citation: V : P : Year: 2009 Type: Publisher
Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub19446406 Accession (PMID): 19446406
Abstract: The mast cell has been associated with fibrosis in many different it issues , organs , and different disease processes including hematopoietic malignancies . Mast cells are often increased in the bone marrow of patients with primary bone marrow disorders , and patients with systemic mastocytosis often have a second concomitant neoplastic disease of the bone marrow . The goals of the current study were to determine the role the mast cell has in the pathogenesis of myeloproliferative neoplasms ( MPN ) and to correlate the mast cell burden with the degree of reticulin fibrosis . We used computer-assisted image analysis of bone marrow core biopsies stained for mast cell tryptase from patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms [ 31 cases : 12 chronic myelogenous leukemia ( CML ) , 6 primary myelofibrosis ( PMF ) , 4 essential thrombocythemia ( ET ) , 4 polycythemia vera ( PV ) , and 5 chronic myeloproliferative disorder , unclassifiable ( CMPD-U ) ] . Although the number of cases of some subtypes of MPN was small , the results suggested that PMF and ET each had significantly more mast cells than both CML and control cases ( P<0 . 01 and 0 . 05 , respectively , Mann-Whitney test ) . CMPD-U and PV showed no significant differences from the control cases , but the CML cases had significantly fewer mast cells than our control cases ( P=0 . 02 , Mann-Whitney test ) . In addition , the quantity of mast cells seen in the bone marrows of MPN patients correlated with reticulin fibrosis ( P=0 . 04 , Mann-Whitney test ) . Our studies highlight the different mast cell quantities in different myeloproliferative neoplasms and suggest a direct role for the mast cell in intramedullary fibrosis . Further studies are warranted to confirm our observation and to study the mechanisms by which mast cells contribute to fibrosis in the MPN setting .

Title: Food availability and photoperiod affect reproductive development and maintenance in the marsh rice rat ( Oryzomys palustris ) .
Author: Edmonds KE Riggs L Stetson MH .
Journal: Physiol . Behav . Citation: V : 78 ( 1 ) P : 41-9 Year: 2003 Type: ARTICLE
Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub12536009 Accession (PMID): 12536009
Abstract: To examine whether photoperiod and food availability interact to influence reproductive development ( Experiment 1 ) , we exposed juvenile male and female rice rats to 16L : 8D or 14L : 10D and to ad lib , 80% of ad lib , or 60% of ad lib food intake from 3 to 8 weeks of age and recorded body and reproductive organ masses . Absolute paired testis masses were similar in ad lib and 80% of ad lib groups but significantly different than the 60% of ad lib group in both photoperiods . Relative paired testis masses were significantly different in the 80% and 60% of ad lib groups on 16L : 8D only . Absolute seminal vesicle masses ( SVM ) were directly dependent upon the level of food restriction in both photoperiods , but relative SVMs were different only in the 60% of ad lib group . Terminal body masses were also directly dependent upon the level of food restriction and were greater on 16L : 8D than on 14L : 10D at most levels of food availability . In juvenile females , absolute uterine mass was only affected in the 60% of ad lib group on 14L : 10D , while absolute paired ovary masses were affected on both photoperiods in the 60% of ad lib groups only . There was no effect of photoperiod or food on relative uterine and paired ovary masses . Terminal body mass was affected by food intake in both photoperiods . Lastly , in adult males ( Experiment 2 ) , photoperiod and food restriction affected reproductive function . Within a photoperiod , there was no effect of food restriction ( 75% of ad lib ) on the testes , seminal vesicles , or testosterone levels in animals housed on 16L : 8D , but terminal body mass was significantly reduced . On 12L : 12D , however , food restriction significantly decreased testes and SVMs relative to ad lib-fed controls . Testosterone levels were reduced regardless of food availability . There was no effect of food restriction on terminal body mass . These results suggest that multiple potential environmental cues can be utilized to affect gonadal status in both juvenile and adult marsh rice rats .

Title: Videoendoscopic measurement of food bolus formation for quantitative evaluation of masticatory function .
Author: Abe R Furuya J Suzuki T
Journal: J Prosthodont Res Citation: V : 55 P : 171-8 Year: 2011 Type: MEDLINE
Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub21296046 Accession (PMID): 21296046
Abstract: PURPOSE : In the field of prosthodontics , many methods for evaluating the masticatory function involve ejection of the food bolus from the mouth . In addition , these methods could not evaluate mastication and swallowing function comprehensively . The present study aimed to quantitatively evaluate masticatory functions during a series of masticatory and swallowing movements by using videoendoscopy . METHODS : Subjects are ten healthy dentulous adults without dysphagia . The test foods used were 2-colored ( green and white ) molded rice and uirou ( rice cake ) . The test foods were consumed under the restriction on the number of mastication ( 10 , 15 , 20 , and 30 ) , and under the instruction to "chew normally" or "chew well" . The masticatory function was evaluated by observing the food bolus in the oropharynx with a videoendoscope . The bolus formation index ( BFI ) , in terms of the degree of mixing of the green and white parts , was quantitatively determined using an image measurement software . RESULTS : The BFI of the rice and uirou increased significantly with increase in the number of mastication times ( p<0 . 01 ) . A significantly correlation coefficient was observed between the BFI and the number of mastication ( 0 . 84 for rice and 0 . 89 for uirou ) . The BFI obtained by "chewing well" was significantly higher than that obtained by "chewing normally" ( p<0 . 01 ) . CONCLUSIONS : The results of this study confirm that the endoscopic measurement of food bolus formation by mastication in terms of the color tones of 2-colored test foods enables quantitative evaluation of the masticatory function during a series of masticatory and swallowing movements .

Abstract: Some oligopeptides and amino acids have a strong influence on the sensory qualities of sake , but the formation process of such compounds in sake mash has not been well elucidated . In this study , we investigated the formation process of bitter-tasting peptides derived from rice proteins in sake mash , because knowledge about their formation may contribute to the quality control of sake . We analyzed rice protein hydrolysates in sake mash , as well as in the enzymatic digest of steamed rice grains digested by either sake-koji or by crude enzyme extracted from sake-koji . SDS-PAGE showed that a smaller amount of polypeptides ( >MW 10 , 000 ) accumulated in the supernatant of sake mash than in either enzymatic digest The concentration of peptides in the supernatant of sake mash increased gradually from the early stages of fermentation . Five bitter-tasting peptides ( No 9 , mash , were not found in significant amounts in sake-koji . On the other hand , these peptides accumulated at the early stages of both sake mash fermentation and the enzymatic digests , although the levels in sake mash were higher than those in the digests . The present study demonstrated that the 5 bitter-tasting peptides formed in high concentrations when steamed rice grains were digested under conditions of sake mash fermentation with yeast
