Title: Serum C-reactive protein as a marker for wellness assessment .
Author: Kao PC Shiesh SC Wu TJ .
Journal: Ann . Clin . Lab . Sci . Citation: V : 36 ( 2 ) P : 163-9 Year: Type: ARTICLE
Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub16682512 Accession (PMID): 16682512
Abstract: C-reactive protein ( CRP ) , a nonspecific inflammatory marker , is widely used to monitor treatment of cardiovascular diseases ( high serum CRP levels indicate poor outcome of heart disease ) . A healthy lifestyle decreases serum CRP levels , while obesity , physical inactivity , and smoking increase them . CRP , a stable pentameric protein , has a half-life of 19 hr , is not subject to diurnal variation , and can serve as a marker of wellness and a candidate for future direct access testing for people monitoring their health after adopting a healthier lifestyle . The CRP level may be influenced more by lifestyle than by genetics . Monozygotic twins may not have the same CRP level ; within each twin pair , the one with higher adiposity generally has a higher CRP level than the one with low adiposity . Chronic diseases generally have a lower prevalence among Asians than among Westerners . Asians also have lower CRP levels than Westerners . In large population studies , the median CRP level of Asians is only one-tenth that of Westerners . Is there a factor in the lifestyle or diet of Asians that accounts for lower CRP levels? For example , a statin inhibitor of cholesterol synthesis occurs in red yeast rice , an important component of the Asian diet . In summary , CRP is a marker for monitoring cardiovascular therapy and assessing the wellness of the general population . Through improving health and preventing disease , CRP testing may help lower a nations health costs .

Title: IL1B genetic variation and plasma C-reactive protein level among young adults : the CARDIA study .
Author: Enquobahrie DA Rice K Williams OD Williams MA Gross MD Lewis CE Schwartz SM Siscovick DS
Journal: Atherosclerosis Citation: V : 202 P : 513-20 Year: 2009 Type: MEDLINE
Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub18573495 Accession (PMID): 18573495
Abstract: OBJECTIVE : Interleukin-1B ( IL1B ) modulates C-reactive protein ( CRP ) expression . However , whether IL1B genetic variation is associated with CRP level is unknown . Further , obesity , a state of low-grade inflammation that influences cellular IL-1 functions may modify this association . METHODS AND RESULTS : Study participants ( N=3289 ) , 48% blacks and 52% whites , had CRP level measurements at year 7 and year 15 examinations as part of the CARDIA study . Ten tag single nucleotide polymorphisms ( SNPs ) that characterize common IL1B gene variation were genotyped . In SNP analysis , no significant associations with either level or change in time CRP were observed after multiple testing adjustments . However , global ILIB gene variation was associated with year 7 to year 15 change in CRP ( global nominal p=0 . 004 , multiple testing corrected p=0 . 048 ) among obese blacks . Compared to the commonest haplotype , a common haplotype that includes the SNP rs1143642 was associated with greater increases in CRP from year 7 to year 15 among obese blacks and whites while another common haplotype that includes the SNP rs3917356 was associated with decreased change in CRP from year 7 to year 15 among obese blacks . The rare alleles of ILIB SNPs , SNP 7114 ( rs1143642 ) and SNP 3298 ( rs3917356 ) , were associated with greater increases and decreases in CRP from year 7 to year 15 among blacks , respectively , compared to their common variants . CONCLUSION : IL1B genetic variation may have a role in CRP level regulation and this association may be modified by obesity .

Title: Effects of xuezhikang , an extract of cholestin , on lipid profile and C-reactive protein : a short-term time course study in patients with stable angina .
Author: Li JJ Hu SS Fang CH Hui RT Miao LF Yang YJ Gao RL .
Journal: Clin . Chim . Acta Citation: V : 352 ( 1-2 ) P : 217-24 Year: 2005 Type: ARTICLE
Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub15653117 Accession (PMID): 15653117
Abstract: BACKGROUND : Reduction of cholesterol and inflammation can be achieved by administration of a statin . Xuezhikang , an extract of cholestin , available from Chinese red yeast rice , could effectively modify the lipid profile . However , limited information is available regarding rapid effects of Xuezhikang on plasma C-reactive protein ( CRP ) and the lipid profile in patients with stable angina . We evaluated the short-term time course effects of lipid profile and CRP by Xuezhikang in patients with stable angina . METHODS : Forty-eight consecutive patients with stable angina were randomly assigned to 1200 or 2400 mg/day of Xuezhikang . Blood samples were drawn at days 0 , 1 , 7 and 14 for lipid profile and CRP levels in all patients , and hepatic enzymes were also evaluated at days 0 and 14 . RESULTS : Both doses of Xuezhikang induced significant reductions in median CRP levels and in mean CRP levels at day 1 ( 13 . 0% with 1200 and 16 . 6% with 2400 mg/day ; 14 . 7% with 1200 and 18 . 4% with 2400 mg/day ) , and at day 7 ( 18 . 3% with 1200 and 20 . 2% with 2400 mg/day ; 18 . 5% with 1200 and 22 . 6% with 2400 mg/day ) as well as at day 14 ( 28 . 6% with 1200 and 30 . 4% with 2400 mg/day ; 21 . 7% with 1200 and 24 . 8% with 2400 mg/day ) compared with baseline without a dose-dependent effect but a time-dependent manner . In addition , no changes were found at days 1 and 7 regarding lipid profile . However , both doses of Xuezhikang induced significant reductions in total cholesterol ( TC , 13% and 22% ) , and low-density lipoprotein ( LDL ) cholesterol ( 23% and 32% ) compared with baseline at day 14 . The higher dose of Xuezhikang ( 2400 mg/day ) resulted in significantly greater reductions in TC and LDL cholesterol compared with 1200 mg/day group ( p<0 . 05 , p<0 . 01 , respectively ) . A less significant reduction was observed in triglycerides ( TG ) level ( 13% and 23% ) compared with TC and LDL cholesterol . There was no significant difference in mean high-density lipoprotein ( HDL ) cholesterol levels compared with baseline in both groups . CONCLUSIONS : Xuezhikang resulted in rapid reduction of CRP within 24 h and lipid profile within 2 weeks , which may be clinically important for patients with coronary artery disease .

Title: Common variants in the CRP gene in relation to longevity and cause-specific mortality in older adults : the Cardiovascular Health Study .

Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub17888441 Accession (PMID): 17888441
Abstract: Common polymorphisms in the CRP gene are associated with plasma CRP levels in population-based studies , but associations with age-related events are uncertain . A previous study of CRP haplotypes in older adults was broadened to include longevity and cause-specific mortality ( all-cause , noncardiovascular ( non-CV ) , and cardiovascular ( CV ) ) . Common haplotypes were inferred from four tagSNPs in 4512 whites and five tagSNPs in 812 blacks from the Cardiovascular Health Study , a longitudinal cohort of adults over age 65 . Exploratory analyses addressed early versus late mortality . CRP haplotypes were not associated with all-cause mortality or longevity overall in either population , but associations with all-cause mortality differed during early and late periods . In blacks , the haplotype tagged by 3872A ( rs1205 ) was associated with increased risk of non-CV mortality , relative to other haplotypes ( adjusted hazard ratio for each additional copy : 1 . 42 , 95% CI : 1 . 07 , 1 . 87 ) . Relative to other haplotypes , this haplotype was associated with decreased risk of early but not decreased risk of late CV mortality in blacks ; among whites , a haplotype tagged by 2667C ( rs1800947 ) gave similar but nonsignificant findings . If confirmed , CRP genetic variants may be weakly associated with CV and non-CV mortality in older adults , particularly in self-identified blacks .

Abstract: OBJECTIVE : To observe the intervention of Xuezhikang ( XZK ) on patients of acute coronary syndrome ( ACS ) with different levels of blood lipids . METHODS : Adopting the double blind randomized controlled method , 105 patients of ACS were divided into two groups . The 53 patients in the treated group , 26 with normal blood lipids ( NBL ) and 27 with hyperlipemia ( HL ) were treated with conventional western medicine plus XZK 1 . 2 g per day for 12 weeks . The 52 patients in the control group , 25 with NBL and 27 with HL , were treated with conventional western medicine alone . Besides , a healthy control group consisted of 40 subjects was set up . The changes of brachial arterial endothelium-dependent diastolic function ( FMD ) before and after treatment was observed , the changes of blood levels of nitric oxide ( NO ) , endothelin-1 ( ET-1 ) , C-reactive protein ( CRP ) and lipids were also recorded . RESULTS : Before treatment , FMD value and serum NO level were lower and ET-1 and CRP levels in ACS patients were higher than those in the healthy subjects , and a significant correlation existed between CRP , NO and FMD with LDL-C After treated for 12 weeks , FMD value and serum NO level increased , levels of ET-1 and CRP decreased significantly in the treated group , showing significant difference to those in the control group ( P < 0 . 05 , P < 0 . 01 ) . Serum levels of TC , TG and LDL-C in the treated group lowered significantly . HDL-C level in patients with HL increased significantly while in those with NBL , it showed a trend of increasing but with no statistical significance . CONCLUSION : Applying XZK in ACS patients in early stage , either with NBL or with HL , could improve the endothelial function , antagonize inflammatory response to stabilize the atheromatous plaque .
