Enter keyword(s) and/or category/ies. Selecting categories for a query makes a search more specific. For example, you can retrieve sentences that contain the word HSN and a Oryza sativa gene name by typing the keyword 'SPW1' and choosing the category 'gene (Oryza sativa)'. A category hit occurs when a particular word or phrase in the sentence is defined as a member of a particular category. Categories will be concatenated by a Boolean 'and' operation to other categories and keyword(s) if present. To search for terms in categories, click on the Categories/Ontology link above.

Title: [ Inheritance of bc1 gene in intersubspecific hybrids of rice ( Oryza sativa L ) ]
Author: L CG Zong SY Zhao L Qi QM Zou JS Ikehashi H
Journal: Yi Chuan Xue Bao Citation: V : 31 ( 10 ) P : 1129-35 Year: 2004 Type: ARTICLE
Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub15552049 Accession (PMID): 15552049
Abstract: Distorted segregation of the brittle culm-1 gene ( bc1 ) on rice chromosome 3 was found with greatly increased or decreased frequency of bc1 bc1 genotype in inter-subspecific hybrids , although the gene normally transmitted to its offspring following the Mendelian Law in intra-subspecific hybrids . In a combination of Kamairazu//Ketan Nangka/Kamairazu , an increased frequency of bc1 bc1 in F1 , normal segregation in F2 , and increased and decreased frequency in a few F3 and F4 lines were observed . In a cross of IR36/Kamairazu , decreased frequency in F2 , both normal and decreased segregations in F3 and F4 , and a few lines of increased ratio in F4 were found . In F2 of Ketan Nangka/IR36//Kamairazu , increased and decreased and normal segregations were all observed . There was no significant correlation between the frequency of bc1 bc1 and pollen fertility . It implied that distorted segregation of bc1 was caused by selective fertilization of male gametes , which were governed by gametophyte genes of ga2 , ga3 and ga14 on chromosome 3 .

Title: BC10 , a DUF266-containing and Golgi-located type II membrane protein , is required for cell-wall biosynthesis in rice ( Oryza sativa L ) .

Abstract: Glycosyltransferases ( GTs ) are one of the largest enzyme groups required for the synthesis of complex wall polysaccharides and glycoproteins in plants . However , due to the limited number of related mutants that have observable phenotypes , the biological function ( s ) of most GTs in cell-wall biosynthesis and assembly have remained elusive . We report here the isolation and in-depth characterization of a brittle rice mutant , brittle culm 10 ( bc10 ) . bc10 plants show pleiotropic phenotypes , including brittleness of the plant body and retarded growth . The BC10 gene was cloned through a map-based approach , and encodes a Golgi-located type II membrane protein that contains a domain designated as domain of unknown function 266 ( DUF266 ) and represents a multiple gene family in rice . BC10 has low sequence similarity with the domain to a core 2 beta-1 , 6-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase ( C2GnT ) , and its in vitro enzymatic activity suggests that it functions as a glycosyltransferase . Monosaccharide analysis of total and fractioned wall residues revealed that bc10 showed impaired cellulose biosynthesis . Immunolocalization and isolation of arabinogalactan proteins ( AGPs ) in the wild-type and bc10 showed that the level of AGPs in the mutant is significantly affected . BC10 is mainly expressed in the developing sclerenchyma and vascular bundle cells , and its deficiency causes a reduction in the levels of cellulose and AGPs , leading to inferior mechanical properties .

Title: Brittle Culm 12 , a dual-targeting kinesin-4 protein , controls cell-cycle progression and wall properties in rice .
Author: Zhang M Zhang B Qian Q Yu Y Li R Zhang J Liu X Zeng D Li J Zhou Y
Journal: Plant J Citation: V : 63 P : 312-28 Year: 2010 Type: MEDLINE

Abstract: Kinesins are encoded by a large gene family involved in many basic processes of plant development . However , the number of functionally identified kinesins in rice is very limited . Here , we report the functional characterization of Brittle Culm12 ( BC12 ) , a gene encoding a kinesin-4 protein . bc12 mutants display dwarfism resulting from a significant reduction in cell number and brittleness due to an alteration in cellulose microfibril orientation and wall composition . BC12 is expressed mainly in it issues undergoing cell division and secondary wall thickening . In vitro biochemical analyses verified BC12 as an authentic motor protein . This protein was present in both the nucleus and cytoplasm and associated with microtubule arrays during cell division . Mitotic microtubule array comparison , flow cytometric analysis and expression assays of cyclin-dependent kinase ( CDK ) complexes in root-tip cells showed that cell-cycle progression is affected in bc12 mutants . BC12 is very probably regulated by CDKA ; 3 based on yeast two-hybrid and microarray data . Therefore , BC12 functions as a dual-targeting kinesin protein and is implicated in cell-cycle progression , cellulose microfibril deposition and wall composition in the monocot plant rice .

Title: Distinctive sorption mechanisms of 4-chlorophenol with black carbons as elucidated by different pH .
Author: Shih YH Su YF Ho RY Su PH Yang CY
Journal: Sci Total Environ Citation: V : 433 P : 523-9 Year: 2012 Type: In-Data-Review
Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub22842752 Accession (PMID): 22842752
Abstract: Black carbon ( BC ) has been considered as an important sorbent in the environment in recent years due to its high sorption capacity and unique sorption behavior . Sorption characteristics of black carbons from two main sources were investigated to get a better understanding of organic chemical fate in the environment . The present study showed sorption mechanisms of 4-chlorophenol , a common organic contaminant in the surroundings , in two kinds of black carbons , soot surrogate ( BC1 ) and environmental char ( BC2 ) derived from rice straw . Sorption capacity of 4-chlorophenol was much higher in BC1 than on BC2 due to the larger surface area of BC1 . However , the surface-area normalized sorption coefficients ( sorption capacity per surface area ) of BC2 were higher than those of BC1 , indicating electrostatic attraction and actions of polar foundational groups on BC2 can react with 4-chlorophenol . With increasing temperature , sorption of BC1 decreased but the sorption of BC2 significantly increased at pH 10 and only slightly increased at pH 4 . An exothermic sorption reaction was found for BC1 ; however , an endothermic reaction of chemical sorption occurred on BC2 at pH 10 due to the electrostatic attraction . At pH4 , sorption capacity of BC2 decreased and the small positive sorption enthalpy indicated that less electrostatic attractions occurred because of the neutral form of 4-chlorophenol and the domination of mainly hydrophobic interactions .

Abstract: Plant mechanical strength is an important agronomic trait . To understand the molecular mechanism that controls the plant mechanical strength of crops , we characterized the classic rice mutant brittle culm1 ( bc1 ) and isolated BC1 using a map-based cloning approach . BC1 , which encodes a COBRA-like protein , is expressed mainly in developing sclerenchyma cells and in vascular bundles of rice . In these types of cells , mutations in BC1 cause not only a reduction in cell wall thickness and cellulose content but also an increase in lignin level , suggesting that BC1 , a gene that controls the mechanical strength of monocots , plays an important role in the biosynthesis of the cell walls of mechanical it issues .
