Title: Ds tagging of BRANCHED FLORETLESS 1 ( BFL1 ) that mediates the transition from spikelet to floret meristem in rice ( Oryza sativa L ) .
Author: Zhu QH Hoque MS Dennis ES Upadhyaya NM .
Journal: BMC Plant Biol . Citation: V : 3 ( ) P : 6 Year: 2003 Type: ARTICLE
Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub14503923 Accession (PMID): 14503923
Abstract: BACKGROUND : The genetics of spikelet formation , a feature unique to grasses such as rice and maize , is yet to be fully understood , although a number of meristem and organ identity mutants have been isolated and investigated in Arabidopsis and maize . Using a two-element Ac/Ds transposon tagging system we have isolated a rice mutant , designated branched floretless 1 ( bfl1 ) which is defective in the transition from spikelet meristem to floret meristem . RESULTS : The bfl1 mutant shows normal differentiation of the primary rachis-branches leading to initial spikelet meristem ( bract-like structure equivalent to rudimentary glumes ) formation but fails to develop empty glumes and florets . Instead , axillary meristems in the bract-like structure produce sequential alternate branching , thus resulting in a coral shaped morphology of the branches in the developing panicle . The bfl1 mutant harbours a single Ds insertion in the upstream region of the BFL1 gene on chromosome 7 corresponding to PAC clone P0625E02 ( GenBank Acc No message URL http : //www . ncbi . nlm . nih . gov/entrez/query . fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=nucleotide&list_uids=34395191&dopt=GenBank&term=ap004570AP004570 ) . RT-PCR analyses revealed a drastic reduction of BFL1 transcript levels in the bfl1 mutant compared to that in the wild-type . In each of the normal panicle-bearing progeny plants , from occasional revertant seeds of the vegetatively-propagated mutant plant , Ds was shown to be excised from the bfl1 locus . BFL1 contains an EREBP/AP2 domain and is most likely an ortholog of the maize transcription factor gene BRANCHED SILKLESS1 ( BD1 ) . CONCLUSIONS : bfl1 is a Ds-tagged rice mutant defective in the transition from spikelet meristem ( SM ) to floret meristem ( FM ) . BFL1 is most probably a rice ortholog of the maize ERF ( EREBP/AP2 ) transcription factor gene BD1 . Based on the similarities in mutant phenotypes bfl1 is likely to be an allele of the previously reported frizzy panicle locus .

Title: Sorting signals in the cytosolic tail of membrane proteins involved in the interaction with plant ARF1 and coatomer .
Author: Contreras I Ortiz-Zapater E Aniento F
Journal: Plant J Citation: V : 38 ( 4 ) P : 685-98 Year: 2004 Type: ARTICLE
Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub15125774 Accession (PMID): 15125774
Abstract: In mammals and yeast , a cytosolic dilysine motif is critical for endoplasmic reticulum ( ER ) localization of type I membrane proteins . Retrograde transport of type I membrane proteins containing dilysine motifs at their cytoplasmic carboxy ( C ) -terminal tail involves the interaction of these motifs with the COPI coat . The C-terminal dilysine motif has also been shown to confer ER localization to type I membrane proteins in plant cells . Using in vitro binding assays , we have analyzed sorting motifs in the cytosolic tail of membrane proteins , which may be involved in the interaction with components of the COPI coat in plant cells . We show that a dilysine motif in the -3 , -4 position ( relative to the cytosolic C-terminus ) recruits in a very specific manner all the subunits of the plant coatomer complex Lysines can not be replaced by arginines or histidines to bind plant coatomer . A diphenylalanine motif in the -7 , -8 position , which by itself has a low ability to bind plant coatomer , shows a clear cooperativity with the dilysine motif . Both dilysine and diphenylalanine motifs are present in the cytosolic tail of several proteins of the p24 family of putative cargo receptors , which has several members in plant cells . The cytosolic tail of a plant p24 protein is shown to recruit not only coatomer but also ADP ribosylation factor 1 ( ARF1 ) , a process which depends on both dilysine and diphenylalanine motifs . ARF1 binding increases twofold upon treatment with brefeldin A ( BFA ) and is completely abolished upon treatment with GTPgammaS , suggesting that ARF1 can only interact with the cytosolic tail of p24 proteins in its GDP-bound form .

Title: [ Analysis on the inheritance of inhibition and anti-inhibition of coleoptile purple line in rice and the SSR location of Ai ( t ) gene ]
Author: Zhang Y Shen FC Yang GW He GH Zhang ZS Yang ZL .
Journal: Yi Chuan Xue Bao Citation: V : 31 ( 8 ) P : 830-5 Year: 2004 Type: ARTICLE

Abstract: The ratio of purple line : no-purple line ( 13 : 3 ) was observed in six different F2 populations produced by crossing between parents with purple line and no-purple line in coleoptile . The backcross of XNA//XNA/ 21A150 ( XNA , no-purple line and CMS , as the recurrent parent ) resulted in a ratio of 1 : 1 ( purple line : no-purple line ) . Genetic analysis showed that the expression of rice coleoptile purple line was influenced by two genes , inhibiting gene I and anti-inhibiting gene Ai ( t ) . I gene inhibits P gene of C_A_P_ system and Ai ( t ) inhibits / gene , respectively . The gene pools of Ai ( t ) ai ( t ) and ai ( t ) ai ( t ) were constructed with BF1 of XNA//XNA/21A150 . SSR analysis indicated that Ai ( t ) gene was linked with the markers of RM335 , RM295 , RM287 and RM21 and the genetic distance from Ai ( t ) to these four markers were 2 . 8 cM , 10 . 2 cM , 13 . 9 cM , 26 . 1 cM , respectively .

Title: Low cost sorbents for the removal of methyl parathion pesticide from aqueous solutions .
Author: Akhtar M Hasany SM Bhanger MI Iqbal S
Journal: Chemosphere Citation: V : 66 ( 10 ) P : 1829-38 Year: 2007 Type: ARTICLE
Literature: oryza Field: abstract Doc ID: pub17109916 Accession (PMID): 17109916
Abstract: Sorptive potential of selected agricultural waste materials ie rice ( Oryza sativa ) bran ( RB ) , bagasse fly ash ( BFA ) of sugarcane ( Saccharum officinarum ) , Moringa oleifera pods ( MOP ) and rice husk ( RH ) for the removal of methyl parathion pesticide ( MP ) from surface and ground waters has been investigated . Optimization of operating parameters of sorption process , ie sorbent dose , agitation time , pH , initial concentration of sorbate , and temperature have been studied . The sorption data fitted to Freundlich , Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich ( D-R ) sorption isotherms . The maximum capacities of RB , BFA , MOP and RH for MP were calculated to be 3 . 6+/-0 . 8 , 5 . 3+/-1 . 4 , 5 . 2+/-1 . 5 and 4 . 7+/-1 . 0mmolg ( -1 ) by Freundlich , 0 . 39+/-0 . 009 , 0 . 39+/-0 . 005 , 0 . 36+/-0 . 004 and 0 . 35+/-0 . 008mmolg ( -1 ) by Langmuir and 0 . 9+/-0 . 08 , 1 . 0+/-0 . 10 , 1 . 0+/-0 . 10 and 0 . 9+/-0 . 07mmolg ( -1 ) by D-R isotherms respectively , employing 0 . 1g of each sorbent , at pH 6 , 90min agitation time and at 303K . Application of first order Lagergren and Morris-Weber equations to the kinetic data yielded correlation coefficients , close to unity . Thermodynamic parameters of sorption process , ie DeltaH , DeltaS and DeltaG were computed and their negative values indicated the exothermic and spontaneous nature of sorption process . The pesticide may be stripped by sonication with methanol , making the regeneration and reutilization of sorbents promising . The sorbents investigated exhibited their potential applications in water decontamination , treatment of industrial and agricultural waste waters .
